Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
In order to respect the Sanctuary of Machupicchu and its surrounding environment, the Machupicchu Sanctuary Lodge is responsible for the following:
- They are the only plastic bottle free hotel in Peru. They are aware that the PET plastic bottle takes 400 years to degrade and that at our property an average of 36,000 plastic bottles were used per year
- The hotel implemented a paper recycling system in the guest rooms
- The hotel uses only cleaning and sanitizing biodegradable, environmentally friendly products. They have an ingenious system of waste segregation in their rooms and kitchens to encourage many different recycling systems and have used this system to achieve a 100 % recovery of organic waste, by transforming it into high quality organic fertilizer. Through this method, 36,000 kilos per year of organic waste is converted into 18,000 kilos of natural fertilizers
Ecosite: Social responsibility together with PeruRail
The Sanctuary Lodge in Machupicchu funded and managed the agricultural training centre for young students graduating from agricultural colleges in communities surrounding the Machupicchu Sanctuary Lodge and railway. Some of these communities are Sichuan, Piscacucho, Urubamba, Huarocondo and Mandor. Over 550 young students from these surrounding communities have been trained in organic farming and pesticide free practices. These students also receive courses on small business management, small animal husbandry, paper recycling and recovery of organic waste.
