Machu Picchu Local Events
Peru Professes Catholic Religion and most of the Machu Picchu festivals and events are religious. However in the andes those festivities involve all the people in a festivity that in some cases is many days long. Local People celebrate festivities every year to the saints and virgin images that spaniards used to change their beliefs and those festivities are all thrughout the highland towns. Machu Picchu is no exception, people celebrates saints and virgins but also cruz velacuy (adore the cross), Corpus Christi. The Lord of Tremors festival is a local celebration for the anniversary of the town foundation which ends in a big party in the main plaza of Aguas Calientes town with plenty of music and beer.
Carnivals are always big, lively affairs throughout South America. Although a little subdued in Peru, they are not to be missed, especially if you travel in February.
